My new Transparent Laptop :-)

Bought this new Transparent Monitor Laptop. Goes transparent when the background is changed due to any movement. :-)

Zoom Wannabe!

Ok, I must admit that I could have done this better if I spend some more time than
2 hrs trying to imitate the Zoom Network graphics.

Here is the video

Workflow for AVCHD

If you are like me who braved and bought a AVCHD format Camcorder (Canon HF10 in my case) and struggling to find a AVCHD - MPEG-2 workflow using CS4 then you are kind of safe now. I did some analysis, R&D, lots of browsing the forums etc and came up with this workflow, which is pretty much acceptable.

Softwares Required:
Adobe After Effects CS4
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

Workflow 1 - The easiest way

1. Get a nice fast computer

* Better than Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
* At least 4 GB RAM (Remember XP SP2 (32 Bit) can take maximum of only around 3 GB). So you would need to goto Windows Vista for utilizing 4 GB or get yourself Win XP 64 bit or Vista 64 Bit. [See here for the reason]
* Better still, get the iMac Pro with 4 GB :-)

2. Open Premiere Pro, Import AVCHD footage and Edit, export.
3. Open After Effects, composite or whatever, export
4. Done!

Workflow 2 - Little loss of AVCHD quality

Ok, if you are here, then it means you don't have a super fast computer!!!
This workflow will avoid you from getting any expensive Encoder/Decoders like ProCoder etc. (not that CS4 is cheap)

AVCHD is encoded in MPEG-4 format and is heavily compressed data. So we need to decode it into MPEG-2 format (which is easier on the CPU, but little bigger file size). If you are in MPEG-2 then it works smoothly in AE and PP as usual. But do remember that some amount of quality is lost since MPEG-2 is a lossy compression. (Trust me, unless you are seeing the difference in a Plasma, it is kind of ok!)

1. Minimum Configuration
* Core 2 Dup 2.4 GHz
* 3-4 GB RAM
* Windows XP SP2

Steps
1. Open Premiere Pro
2. Import the AVCHD footage and drop it in the final timeline
3. Goto Export Media Settings and use the following settings
(This for a NTSC, so chose PAL if you have the PAL camera)

This will export your AVCHD MPEG-4 file to a MPEG-2 file which is usable for all your editing and composing. So once you are done editing in Premiere, export it out using the same export settings to AE or other applications.

Sample Footage Sizes
Footage Duration: 3.15 seconds
Input AVCHD File size: 7.29 MB (recorded in 17 MBPS, 1920 x 1080 in 60i with the Canon HF10)
Ouput MPEG File size: 11.75 MB

Enjoy!! Please do let me know if you need any more clarifications.

There goes another Rahman's music to the gallows

Well, whatever the technicians do in a movie, the success of a movie lies in the final result. You can have great music, editing, story, direction but if the frequencies don't hit the nth signal or interval (where 'n' is a magic number), all will have to go the gallows.

A R Rahman has been a victim of these a heck lot number of times. He has given such great soulful music to so many 'dumb', 'no sense' movies that even his music goes down the drain after the movie release. For instance, Yuvvraaj, arguably had one of the most innovative music pieces I ever heard off. And look what happened to the movie, Yuvvraaj was not even nominated for Best music in Star Nokia Awards.

I hear Delhi 6 is a damp squib now. I hate this from the bottom of my heart to think that Rahman gave music to a Rakesyh Mehra's movie who doesn't picturize songs in his films.

I am sad.

Edit:
I saw the movie today, what has he done to the songs? What has the director done to Rahna tu song? Thankx for messing up the title track. And thankx not for messing up Maula and Dil Gira. And as for the movie, I really am sure that this is not the end result Rakyesh wanted and as for the background music?, check out the vocals during the scene where the Baba comes to save the people from Kaala Bandar :-).

Canon HF10 - My Review

Coming soon to a blog far away!!!

Edit:
You think I am crazy to write a review about a camcorder when this is the first time I am touching one? :-). Here are some good reviews though
